With Starfield being the center of the Xbox 2023 Showcase last week, Bethesda gave us a deep dive into one of the biggest games this generation. The King can move a single space in any direction per turn, which should be used to evade danger and take pieces directly next to it when forced to. The King needs to stay safe for the game to continue, meaning you should protect it at all costs. King - The most valuable asset on the board. Queens should do the majority of your heavy lifting in a game, thinning the other player's army and setting up checkmate opportunities. They can move diagonally, horizontally and vertically, with no limit to the number of moves they take in one direction per turn. Queen - Queens are the most useful piece on the board. A knight can move one square horizontally and two squares vertically, making them key for a surprise checkmate that the opponent easily misses. Knight - Knights are useful for moving through awkward piece blockades, with the ability to jump over other pieces and land behind enemy lines. Able to travel diagonally without any limit to the amount of spaces they can move in one direction per turn, it's easy to move the Bishop into positions where they can take out important pieces and retreat back to safety in two turns. They can cross the entire board quickly, trapping the opponent's King and setting up checkmates.īishop - Bishops are great pieces for luring the opponent into a trap. Rook - Rooks (shown above) are versatile pieces that can move forward, backwards, left or right with no limit to the amount of spaces they can move in one direction per turn. The opponent must be in front of the pawn to be taken. If an enemy piece is placed on a tile diagonal to the pawn, they can take it off the board. Pawn - Pawns (shown above) are your general grunts.
